Gowda, Bhonsale, Mukherjee , Bhuvna upset seeds to enter semifinals
of Walchand Cup Junior National ranking tennis.
Pune, Nov 5: Karnataka's Vinod Gowda, Maharashtra's Rutuja Bhonsale, Andhra Pradesh's K Bhuvna and West Bengal's Amruta Mukherjee created major upsets knocking out seeds to move into the semifinal rounds at the Walchand Cup under 16 National Series Tennis Tournament' sponsored by Walchandnagar Industries as a part of their centenary celebrations and organized by Deccan Gymkhana and played on their tennis courts here.
In the Boys under 16 quarterfinals seventh seeded Vinod Gowda , a tenth standard student of the Vivekananda school , Bangalore created the biggest upset accounting for third seeded Rohit Bisht of Delhi 6-3, 6-3 to move into the last four. Top seed Shahbaaz Khan, second seed Ronit Bisht and fourth seeded Vishwesh Sinha also made it to the semifinals with contrasting wins.
Bespectacled twelve year old local lass and seventh standard student of Pune's Nagarwalla school Rutuja Bhonsale created two upsets in day accounting for third seeded Iska Teertha of AP 6-3 6-2 in the pre quarterfinals and fifth seeded Eetee Mehta of Gujarat 6-2, 6-2 in the quarterfinals to move into the last four in the girls singles.
It was a bad day for second seed Prathana Thombare and fourth seeded Vaidehi Bhagwat of Maharashtra as they were shunted out from the singles event.
Seventh seeded K. Bhuvna, a student of the Government high School, Pullivendula in the Cuddapah district of AP registered a shocking 6-4, 7-6 (13-11) win over second seeded and India junior team member Prathana Thombre of Maharashtra.
Sixth seeded Kolkatta's Amruta Mukherjee who won the Asian Ranking tennis in the city in April this year easily accounted for another member of the junior Indian team and fourth seed Vaidehi Bhagwat of Maharashtra 6-2, 6-2 to enter the last four.
Top seed Ankita Raina Gujarat remained the only seed in fray scoring an emphatic 6-2, 6-1over Sabatini Ankaraju of Andhra Pradesh
