Sahoo upsets seventh seed Thyssen, Lakhani moves into 2nd round at $25,000 NECC-ITF Women's Tennis
Pune , November 11: Qualifier and little known Shalini Sahoo of India upset seventh seeded Nicole Thyssen of Nederlands , while another Indian Isha Lakhani scored an easy win to move into the second round on a day when two other seeds were shown the door at the $25,000 NECC- ITF women's tennis Championships sponsored by the National Egg Coordination committee ( NECCC) being organized by the Deccan Gymkhana and being played on their courts here.
In the first round matches played today Shalini Sahoo upset the seventh seded and 236ranked Nicole Thyssen 7-5,2-6,6-2 in a 2hr 15 min battle. Left handed Isha Lakhani became the third player to enter the second round as she accounted for Julia Glushko of Israel 6-3,6-1. Ankita Bhambri had moved to the second round earlier.
In the biggest upset of the day Serbian qualifier Bojana Jovanosvski knocked out third seeded and 201 ranked Agnes Szatmari of Romania 6-3,6-4 ,while in another upset 270th ranked I-Hsuan Hwang of Taipei scored a 6-2,7-5 upset win over fifth seeded Liana Gabriela Ungur of Romania to make it to the second round.
In the first set which lasted for 50 minutes, Shalini broke Thyssen in the 12th game to win the set. In the second set Sahoo was broken in the very first game and in the 5th and 7th games by Thyssen who won the second set easily. In the third set Sahoo again found her bearing and raced to a 5-0 lead, Thyssen who struggled with a shoulder injury couldn't keep up with the pace and surrendered the set and match 6-2 to let Sahoo record her biggest victory so far.
Another Indian wildcard entrant fresh from her double crown triumph at the Grade 3 junior event in Malaysia and member of the MSLTA Vision 2010 programme, Rashmi Teltumbde went down playing a close second set against fourth Seeded Ksenia Palkina of Kyrgyzstan . Palkina won 6-3, 7-5 to move into the second round.
In the second round Ankita will take on top seeded Melanie South , while Sahoo will take on Uzbekistan junior and wild card Alexandra Kolesnichenko. Isha Lakhani will take on eighth seeded Jing jing Lu of China .
